OAVs

The Munto OAV left me a little wanting, however. The animation was nice, no doubt, and simply amazing in spots. The story, too, was interesting and unique. Unfortunately, Munto is only a single one hour OAV, which is far too little time to properly mesh out the large cast of characters and explore the complexities of what seemed an intricate plot. I guess it could be argued that the most important character and the most weighty parts of the story received ample attention, but I would have liked more. Munto truly deserved a multiple episode treatment.

A Medium Not Forgotten

I've been watching a lot of OAVs lately. I had forgotten how enjoyable these smaller doses of anime could be. Take the new Mizuiro OAV, for example. Following it's more, um, "mature" predecessor, the first volume of the new OAV turned out to be one of the more emotionally satisfying bits of anime I've seen in awhile. It's very Kanonesque in nature, with the same sort of lingering bitterness hanging over everything. The artwork is of wonderful quality, with plenty of attention to detail and realism, and the animation is nicely crafted, fluid and engaging. I'm looking forward to the next volume, secretly wishing someone would make a TV series of this - there is so much potential there.

Hakusho

One of the big problems that always plagues shonen fighting shows is the distinct lack of originality. Most of the time, the shows are so formulaic that they become a never-ending source of contempt and derision. Yu Yu Hakusho manages to buck that trend by coming up with many original ideas and plot twists that keep the viewer guessing regularly.
